Donn Poe

This is Donn Poe, a character design I created in the likeness of some of The Legend of Zelda's cooler, creepier characters. Starting with the concept, I wanted him to look eerie but jovial in a way. In the fake game world I envisioned, he would guide the player through a side quest having you collect souls for him.

I blocked out the body in a simple A-pose using ZSpheres and created a simple cage in Maya. I added the hands and staff in Zbrush and began working on anatomical fixes and adding the costuming. At this stage I wanted to try and capture the shape balance of the bigger and medium shapes while also going back and forth on whether I would sculpt the hood or simulate a hood using Marvelous Designer. I ended up going with sculpting as I am inexperienced in Marvelous and the style of the character would work well with sculpted cloth.

After continually struggling with the anatomy and trying to make him look ghoul-ish while also not looking like a strong breeze could snap him in half, I landed on something I liked and moved forward making the cowl out of a sphere and created simple masks in Maya and brought them over and added detail work in Zbrush. I also posed him earlier on as I wanted to tie down the anatomy and needed to move on to the rest of the character.

After applying the details in the masks, hood, staff, loincloth and cage he was at the final sculpting phase. I polypainted him and sent him to Marmoset for rendering and what you saw above is the final result.
